The 36\" x 48\" is for expressways, or oversized for enhanced conspicuity. The 48\" x 60\" is for freeways. Two smaller sizes are also made: the 18\" x 24\" for low-volume roads and the 12\" x 18\" for parking lot islands and private drives, which is below the MUTCD minimum.
