Waymo does not maintain a live public counter for its robotaxi fleet. Its federal software recall filings, however, provide an unusually detailed record. Each filing states how many vehicles carried the affected system, and because Waymo owns the vehicles itself, those reports reveal how quickly the fleet has expanded.
Waymo's most recent safety recall filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, submitted on June 17, 2026, covers 3,871 vehicles. That makes 3,871 the strongest current count of the company's U.S. fleet. It is also a minimum, because the filing covers fifth-generation cars cleared for driverless freeway operation and does not include every newer sixth-generation vehicle or every car restricted to surface streets.
Quick answer: Waymo had at least 3,871 vehicles in its U.S. fleet in June 2026. The figure comes from the company's latest federal safety filing and is the newest official count available. The full fleet was already somewhat larger, since that filing covered only fifth-generation cars approved for driverless freeway operation.

How Many Waymo Cars Are There?
At least 3,871, based on Waymo's June 2026 filing with federal regulators.
Waymo has issued six software recalls since February 2024. Each recall required a Part 573 Safety Recall Report listing the number of potentially involved vehicles. Read in sequence, those six filings create the clearest public timeline of Waymo's fleet, from 444 vehicles in early 2024 to nearly 3,900 by mid-2026.

For scale, Waymo's national fleet is still much smaller than New York City's yellow taxi system, which is capped by law at 13,587 licensed medallions. A fleet of 3,871 Waymos equals about 28.5% of that cap. In other words, the largest robotaxi operation in the United States is still less than one-third the size of one major city's licensed yellow cab fleet.
The two 2026 filings are especially revealing when read together. The May filing covered Waymo's driverless-capable fleet across both hardware generations and counted 3,791 vehicles. The June filing counted 3,871 vehicles even though it covered a narrower group, fifth-generation cars approved for driverless freeway operation. Since the later count was larger despite the narrower scope, Waymo's full fleet had already moved beyond 3,871 by the time of the filing.
Why Recall Filings Are the Best Public Count of Waymo's Fleet
Recall reports are unusually useful for measuring Waymo because the company owns and operates its vehicles. A traditional automaker may need to estimate how many recalled cars remain on the road years after they were sold. Waymo can identify the exact vehicles running a particular software version or carrying a specific driverless capability.
The filings explain how that count is produced. Waymo identifies the affected population using the driverless capabilities and software installed on each vehicle. It can make that match directly because the company owns all potentially affected vehicles. That makes the reported populations more useful than broad industry estimates or counts assembled from street sightings.
Waymo's public comments tend to use rounded fleet figures, while the federal filings provide exact populations. The company acknowledged passing 2,000 vehicles in the second half of 2025, and co-CEO Dmitri Dolgov later described “about 3,000 cars on the roads” in May 2026. That same month, a federal filing counted 3,791 driverless-capable vehicles.
Waymo's Fleet Has Grown Almost Nine Times Since 2024
Across the six federal filings, Waymo's reported vehicle population rose from 444 to 3,871 in roughly 28 months. That is an 8.7-fold increase. The sharpest expansion appeared between the May and December 2025 filings, when the reported population climbed from 1,212 to 3,067 vehicles, adding 1,855 vehicles in seven months.

Each point represents an exact vehicle population reported in a specific filing. Waymo adds vehicles continuously, so the line between filings shows the direction and pace of growth rather than a day-by-day inventory.

How Many Rides Does a Waymo Car Complete?
Waymo's ride volume has grown even faster than its reported fleet. The company reached 500,000 paid rides per week in March 2026, up from 50,000 per week in May 2024. Weekly ridership increased tenfold, while the reported vehicle population grew by roughly six times from June 2024 to June 2026. The network is not only adding cars, it is also completing more rides with each layer of expansion.

Each point marks the public disclosure date for a ridership milestone. The actual threshold may have been crossed shortly before the announcement.
Two available fleet counts produce a useful operating range. Dividing 500,000 weekly rides by the 3,871 vehicles in the June filing gives about 129 rides per vehicle per week, or roughly 18 per day. Using Waymo's description of about 3,000 cars on the road raises the figure to approximately 167 rides per vehicle per week, or 24 per day.
Weekly mileage shows the same high level of use. Dolgov said in May 2026 that Waymo's fleet travels more than 4 million fully autonomous miles each week. Spread across 3,000 to 3,871 vehicles, that equals roughly 1,030 to 1,330 miles per vehicle per week. A typical American vehicle averages roughly 13,500 miles a year, so a working Waymo may cover four to five times as many miles in an average week.

The final row turns Waymo's ridership goal into a fleet-size question. The company has said its measure of success for 2026 is one million paid rides per week by year end. At the current range of rides per vehicle, reaching that target would require approximately 6,000 to 7,700 vehicles, unless Waymo raises utilization further.
Where Are Waymo's Cars?
Waymo does not publish a city-by-city vehicle count. It does publish cumulative driverless mileage by metro area, which provides the clearest public view of where its fleet has accumulated the most activity.
Through March 2026, Waymo reported 220.6 million rider-only miles across five metro areas. These are miles driven without a human behind the wheel, making them a direct measure of where the company's fully autonomous service has operated at scale.

Waymo is already preparing the next wave of markets. On July 8, 2026, the company said it had begun fully autonomous driving in San Diego, Las Vegas, Tampa and Denver, initially with employee riders before a public launch. Waymo also lists roughly 20 additional cities as upcoming markets, including New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C., London and Tokyo.
What Waymo's Recalls Reveal About Road Signs and Work Zones
The filings that reveal Waymo's fleet size also show which roadway situations have challenged the driving system. The earliest recalls centered on unusual objects, including a towed pickup truck and a utility pole positioned within a drivable alley. More recent recalls increasingly involve temporary traffic controls that tell drivers to stop, turn around or avoid a closed part of the roadway.

Four of the six recalls involve devices whose main purpose is to communicate a stop or a closure: gates and chains, a school bus stop arm, freeway ramp closure signs and cones marking closed lanes. That concentration makes temporary traffic control one of the clearest recurring themes in Waymo's recall history.
The June 2026 filing provides the clearest example. Waymo told regulators that vehicles drove past ramp closure signs and entered planned freeway construction zones in Phoenix on April 11 and April 19, 2026. On May 18, seven Waymo vehicles entered active construction lanes in the San Francisco Bay Area by passing between cones that marked the closure.
The school bus recall brought a similar level of scrutiny. NHTSA opened a preliminary evaluation into Waymo's behavior around stopped school buses, the National Transportation Safety Board opened a separate investigation, and Austin's school district documented more than 20 stop-arm violations involving Waymo vehicles during one school year.
Temporary traffic control is simple in purpose but difficult in context. An orange road work sign, a flashing stop arm, a taper of cones or a chained entrance can temporarily override the normal rules of a familiar road. Each device tells drivers that a route that is usually open is now closed, restricted or unsafe. Autonomous vehicles must recognize that change in real time, often before it appears in a base map. Several of Waymo's latest recalls have centered on exactly that challenge.
What the 3,871-Vehicle Count Represents
The 3,871 figure is the strongest current official count of Waymo's U.S. fleet. Understanding what is included helps explain why the total fleet was already somewhat larger.
- It is a minimum fleet count. The June 2026 filing included fifth-generation cars cleared for freeway driving. Newer sixth-generation vehicles and cars restricted to surface streets sit outside that population.
- It includes more than cars actively accepting rides. Waymo described roughly 3,000 cars on the road during the same period that a filing reported 3,791 driverless-capable vehicles. Cars in depots, maintenance, retrofitting, validation or pre-launch testing remain part of the broader fleet.
- It is a dated snapshot. Each filing is tied to a specific software or production cutoff. Waymo continues adding vehicles after that date, so the newest filing establishes a floor for the fleet at that moment.
- It is a national count, not a city breakdown. Waymo publishes mileage by metro area but does not disclose how many vehicles are assigned to each market. City-level fleet figures therefore remain estimates.
- It focuses on driverless-capable vehicles. Waymo is testing and preparing service in about 20 additional U.S. and international cities. Vehicles that have not yet entered the driverless-capable population may not appear in these recall counts.
- The count updates when a new filing appears. Recall reports provide unusually precise checkpoints, but only when a recall occurs. A future filing may become the next clear measure of fleet growth.
What Kind of Car Is a Waymo?
Most vehicles in Waymo's current fleet are Jaguar I-Pace electric SUVs equipped with the fifth-generation Waymo Driver. This platform accounts for nearly every recall population in the fleet timeline and remains the backbone of Waymo's commercial service.
The fleet is now beginning to diversify. The Zeekr RT, a purpose-built electric vehicle that Waymo markets as the Ojai, began carrying public riders on May 28, 2026 in Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Francisco. It is the first passenger platform to use the sixth-generation Waymo Driver. Waymo has also announced plans to add Hyundai Ioniq 5 vehicles upfitted by Magna.
Waymo prepares vehicles at a facility it operates with Magna in Mesa, Arizona. The company has said the plant will integrate more than 2,000 additional I-Pace vehicles through 2026, giving Waymo the manufacturing capacity to support both new markets and higher ride volume in existing cities.
How Many Waymo Cars Will There Be?
Waymo has not published a formal vehicle target for the end of 2026. It has published a ridership target: more than one million paid rides per week, roughly double the 500,000 weekly rides reported in March.
Working backward from current productivity, one million weekly rides would require a fleet of roughly 6,000 to 7,700 vehicles unless each car completes meaningfully more trips. Compared with the latest count of 3,871, that would mean adding approximately 2,100 to 3,800 vehicles. A future recall filing may provide the next exact checkpoint, but Waymo's manufacturing plans and ride target already point to a substantially larger fleet.

The six filings, recalls 24E-013, 24E-049, 25E-034, 25E-084, 26E-026 and 26E-035, are linked from the first table. Vehicle counts use the “number of potentially involved” population reported by Waymo in each filing. The descriptions of crashes, barriers, school buses, flood water and construction zones are quoted or paraphrased from those original reports.
Ridership milestones come from public statements by Waymo and Alphabet, including earnings calls and service updates. Rider-only mileage by metro area comes from Waymo's published safety impact data through March 2026. The list of public service areas reflects Waymo's own market updates as of July 2026.
