Speed Limit Signs FAQs

Are your speed limit signs MUTCD-compliant?

Yes. Our speed limit signs are manufactured to the standards defined in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). This includes the required white background, black legend, and vertical rectangular shape specified for R2-1 series regulatory signs. All signs use 3M retroreflective sheeting that meets or exceeds the minimum reflectivity requirements for permanent sign installations. For the full MUTCD regulatory sign standards, see MUTCD Part 2B.

What are your speed limit signs made of?

Our speed limit signs are manufactured on .080" aluminum substrate. This is the industry standard thickness for permanent traffic signs. It resists rust, corrosion, and bending, and holds up in all weather conditions. The sign face is finished with 3M retroreflective sheeting for nighttime visibility. Signs are pre-punched and radiused to meet MUTCD mounting specifications.

How do I choose the right speed limit sign?

Start by identifying what type of speed sign your location requires:

  • Speed limit signs (R2-1) set a legally enforceable maximum speed. Use these on public roads, private roads, parking lots, and communities where a specific speed limit is established.
  • Advisory speed plaques (W13-1P) recommend a safe speed for a specific condition like a curve or speed hump. These are not enforceable. They mount below a parent warning sign.
  • Speed Checked by Radar (R2-5E) is a supplemental plaque that mounts below a speed limit sign to notify drivers of radar enforcement.

For size, the MUTCD standard for speed limit signs on conventional roads is 24" x 30". For sheeting, HIP is the standard choice for most installations. Choose DG3 for high-speed roads or poorly lit areas.

Do you offer custom speed limit signs?

We carry a full range of speed limit signs from 5 MPH to 65 MPH. If you need a specific speed, size, or sheeting combination not listed in our website, email your requirements to support@roadsigns.com and we will provide a quote.

How do I mount my speed limit sign?

All of our speed limit signs are pre-punched with mounting holes for standard post installation. Speed limit signs mount to U-channel sign posts or square tube posts using sign mounting brackets.

The MUTCD requires regulatory signs to be mounted at a minimum height of 5 feet from the bottom of the sign to the road surface in rural areas, and 7 feet in urban or pedestrian areas. Posts, brackets, and hardware are sold separately. Browse our Sign Posts for compatible options.
