Collection: Shop Signs by Colors

Road sign colors are a code set by the MUTCD: red means stop or do not, white carries a regulation, yellow warns of a condition ahead, fluorescent yellow-green warns of people, and orange marks a work zone. Our color categories let you browse by that code, so you can match a replacement sign or find the signs that belong on one stretch of road.

What Road Sign Colors Mean

Every color on a US road sign is assigned by the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, the federal standard that state and local agencies follow. A driver does not need to read a sign to know its type. Red and white together mean stop or a prohibition. Black on white is a rule. Black on yellow is a warning about the road itself. Black on fluorescent yellow-green is a warning about people. Black on orange is a temporary work zone. Green, blue, and brown guide drivers to routes, services, and recreation. Because the color is part of the message, a sign printed in the wrong color is a wrong sign, even if the words are right.

Browsing by color is useful when you are replacing a damaged sign and want everything that matches, when you are building a school zone or a work zone where every sign must share one color, or when a spec sheet lists the color and you need to find the code behind it.

Brown recreation signs and fluorescent pink incident signs are also part of the MUTCD color code. We do not stock them as standard products, but we can make them to order.

Yellow or Fluorescent Yellow-Green?

This is the color question we are asked most. Plain yellow is the standard warning color for conditions in the road: curves, intersections, animals, surface changes. Fluorescent yellow-green is reserved for warnings about people: school zones, pedestrian and bicycle crossings, and playgrounds. Since the 2009 MUTCD, school warning signs must be fluorescent yellow-green. Pedestrian and bicycle warning signs may be either color, but the MUTCD asks that one color be used consistently within an area, so a town that starts fluorescent yellow-green crosswalk signs on one street should carry it through the neighborhood. Any plaque mounted under a fluorescent yellow-green sign must match it.

Color Is in the Sheeting

The color of a reflective sign comes from the retroreflective sheeting on its face, not from paint. That is why the sheeting grade you choose affects the color you can order. High Intensity Prismatic and Diamond Grade DG3 are both available in standard red, white, and yellow. The fluorescent colors, fluorescent yellow-green and fluorescent orange, are Diamond Grade products, which is why a fluorescent sign costs more than the same sign in plain yellow or orange. On our product pages the sheeting choice sets the color, so pick the sheeting that matches the color your spec calls for.

Road Sign Color FAQ

Can I order a standard sign in a different color?

For a public road, no. The MUTCD ties each sign to its color and an agency will reject a warning sign in white or a regulatory sign in yellow. For private property you can order a custom sign in the color you want, and we will make it, but we recommend keeping the public-road colors so drivers read it the way they expect.

Why does my old sign look faded compared to a new one?

Reflective sheeting loses both brightness and color over time, and yellow and red fade fastest. The MUTCD sets minimum retroreflectivity levels and most agencies replace signs on a 10 to 12 year cycle. If a sign is noticeably paler than its neighbors in daylight, it is probably below the minimum at night.

Are the legend colors also fixed?

Yes. A white regulatory sign uses a black legend, or red for a prohibition. Yellow and orange warning signs use black. Green guide signs use white. Our signs follow those pairings automatically, so you only choose the background color and sheeting.
