Choosing the right sign post depends on the sign size, required mounting height, installation method, and where the sign will be used. U-Channel vs. Square Sign Posts
U-channel and square posts can both support common aluminum traffic and parking signs, but their construction and mounting systems are different.
U-channel posts have an open channel profile and holes punched along the length of the post. They are one of the most widely used sign support styles and are a straightforward choice for mounting a sign to a single post.
Square sign posts use a perforated square-tube design. Because holes are available on all four sides, signs, brackets, and other components can be mounted from different directions. Square posts are also commonly used with telescoping anchors and breakaway support systems.
Green or Galvanized U-Channel?
The main difference is the finish rather than the basic mounting style.
- Galvanized steel: A corrosion-resistant silver finish commonly used for roadway, municipal, commercial, and parking applications.
- Green painted steel: Commonly selected for rural roads, parks, campuses, trails, residential areas, and landscaped locations where a green post is less visually prominent.
Both U-channel styles are punched along the length of the post so the sign can be positioned at the required mounting height.
How Long of a Sign Post Do I Need?
Do not choose a sign post based only on the size of the sign. Post length depends on three measurements:
- The required height from the roadway or ground to the bottom of the sign
- The height of the sign
- The amount of post or anchor required below ground
For a post that will be directly embedded into the ground, the basic calculation is:
Post length = mounting height + sign height + below-ground length
The amount required below ground depends on the post system, soil conditions, sign area, wind load, and applicable installation requirements. An anchor or breakaway system can also change the amount of upper post needed.
MUTCD Sign Mounting Heights
For signs installed on public roads, MUTCD mounting height is measured to the bottom of the sign, not to the top of the post.
- 5 ft minimum: For roadside signs in rural areas, measured from the bottom of the sign to the elevation of the near edge of the pavement.
- 7 ft minimum: For roadside signs in business, commercial, or residential areas where parking, bicyclist, or pedestrian activity is likely, or where the sign could otherwise be obstructed.
- 7 ft minimum above sidewalks: Measured vertically from the bottom of the sign to the sidewalk.
These are general MUTCD mounting-height requirements. Some signs, locations, and support systems have different requirements, so public-road installations should always be checked against the applicable MUTCD section, state standard, local specification, or project plan.
Sign Post Length Examples
The examples below show why the visible height of the post is only part of the calculation. The 2 ft below-ground measurement is used only as an example and should not be treated as a universal installation depth.

In these examples, the installation could require a longer post than someone might expect simply by looking at the sign size. Determine the mounting and anchoring method before ordering the post.
Understanding U-Channel Post Weight
U-channel posts are commonly identified by their weight per linear foot. This is different from the total weight of the post.
- 1.12 lb/ft: A lighter post intended primarily for delineator and marker applications.
- 2 lb/ft: A heavier U-channel post commonly used for traffic, parking, facility, and other sign installations.
Post weight alone does not determine whether a support is appropriate. Sign size, mounting height, wind exposure, soil conditions, number of signs, and the complete support system must also be considered.
Understanding Square Sign Post Sizes
Square sign posts are sized differently from U-channel posts. Instead of selecting them primarily by pounds per foot, square posts are typically identified by the outside dimensions of the tube and the steel gauge.
Perforated square tubing also allows compatible post sizes to telescope together. A smaller upper post can fit into a larger anchor or base post, creating a modular sign support system that makes damaged upper posts easier to replace.
Always match the square post, anchor, bolts, and other hardware by their specified dimensions. Components that look similar are not automatically interchangeable.
What Is a 3.5 ft U-Channel Post For?
The 3.5 ft U-channel option is a base post for compatible breakaway installations. It is not intended to serve as the complete upright for a normal roadside sign.
The base post is installed at ground level and connected to a longer upper U-channel post using a compatible breakaway or splice system. The upper post is then selected according to the required mounting height.
Square Post Breakaway Systems
Square posts can also be installed as part of a breakaway system. A common configuration uses a larger square anchor in the ground with a smaller perforated post inserted into or connected to it.
This type of modular installation can allow the upper post to be replaced without removing the entire foundation after damage. The post, anchor, connection hardware, sign configuration, and installation method must all be compatible with the selected system.
Do Road Sign Posts Need to Be Breakaway?
Sign supports located within the clear zone of a public roadway generally need to be crashworthy unless they are protected by an appropriate barrier or otherwise located where crashworthy support requirements do not apply.
A post by itself should not be considered a complete breakaway system. Compliance depends on the entire installation, including the post, anchor or base, splice, bolts, mounting height, sign configuration, and installation method.
Which Sign Post Is Best for a Parking Lot?
Both U-channel and square posts are commonly used for parking signs.
- Choose U-channel for a simple and economical single-sign installation.
- Choose green U-channel when the appearance of the post matters in a landscaped or residential setting.
- Choose square post when you want four-sided mounting, a square-tube support system, or compatibility with square-post anchors and accessories.
For private parking lots and facilities, mounting requirements may be different from signs installed on public roads. ADA parking signs and local accessibility requirements can also affect sign height and placement.
