Fluorescent Yellow-Green Road Signs Buying Guide

Fluorescent yellow-green is a high-visibility traffic-sign color used for a specific group of warning and crossing applications. It is most closely associated with schools, pedestrians, bicycles, playgrounds, and locations where drivers need additional awareness of people entering or crossing the roadway.

The official MUTCD term is fluorescent yellow-green. These signs are sometimes informally described as yellow-green, lime-green, or neon-green road signs, but they should not be confused with standard green guide signs.

What Do Fluorescent Yellow-Green Road Signs Mean?

A fluorescent yellow-green road sign generally alerts drivers to a school-related condition or to the possible presence or crossing of pedestrians, bicyclists, or other non-motorized road users.

The color itself does not provide the complete message. Drivers must still read the symbol, wording, and any supplemental plaque. For example, the same fluorescent yellow-green background can be used for a School sign, Pedestrian Crossing sign, Bicycle Warning sign, Playground sign, or a directional plaque associated with one of those warnings.

Where Are Yellow-Green Signs Used?

Common fluorescent yellow-green applications in this category include:

• School signs: S1-1 signs used for school areas, school zones, advance school crossings, and school crossings.
• School bus warning signs: S3-1 School Bus Stop Ahead and S3-2 School Bus Turn Ahead signs.

Are School Signs Required to Be Fluorescent Yellow-Green?

Yes. Under the MUTCD, school warning signs and supplemental plaques used with those warning signs generally require a fluorescent yellow-green background with a black legend and border.

This includes signs such as the S1-1 School sign and the applicable plaques that form school advance crossing and school crossing assemblies. School-area signs must also be retroreflective or illuminated.

Do Pedestrian and Bicycle Signs Have to Be Yellow-Green?

Not every pedestrian or bicycle warning sign is required to use fluorescent yellow-green. For several MUTCD warning signs, standard yellow and fluorescent yellow-green are both permitted options.

For example, the W11-2 Pedestrian Crossing sign, W11-1 Bicycle sign, W11-15 Bicycle and Pedestrian Crossing sign, and certain related plaques may use a fluorescent yellow-green background. The W15-1 Playground sign may also use fluorescent yellow-green.

When fluorescent yellow-green is selected for a crossing or warning sign, the MUTCD recommends using the color systematically within the selected area rather than mixing yellow and fluorescent yellow-green signs at the same site.

Yellow vs. Fluorescent Yellow-Green Signs

Standard yellow is the familiar background color used for many general warning signs. Fluorescent yellow-green is reserved for a narrower group of applications where school activity, pedestrians, bicycles, playgrounds, or related crossing activity is involved.

A curve, intersection, animal crossing, or other ordinary roadway warning is therefore generally yellow rather than fluorescent yellow-green. The correct color is determined by the specific MUTCD sign and application.

School Crossing Signs and Supplemental Plaques

The S1-1 School sign can serve several purposes depending on where and how it is installed. It can identify a school area or school zone, provide advance warning of a school crossing, or mark the crossing itself.

For an advance school crossing, the S1-1 sign is used with an AHEAD or distance plaque. At the school crossing itself, it is used with a diagonal downward-pointing arrow plaque identifying the crossing location.

Because the supplemental plaque is part of the warning-sign assembly, its background should match the fluorescent yellow-green school warning sign.

What Size Yellow-Green Sign Do I Need?

The correct size depends on the MUTCD sign code and roadway application. There is no single standard size for all fluorescent yellow-green signs.

For example, the MUTCD lists 36" x 36" as the conventional-road size for the S1-1 School, S3-1 School Bus Stop Ahead, and S3-2 School Bus Turn Ahead signs, with 30" x 30" minimum and 48" x 48" oversized versions for applicable roadway conditions.

Supplemental plaques use different dimensions, and in-street pedestrian signs have their own designs and mounting requirements. For public-road applications, choose the size specified for the particular MUTCD sign and roadway condition rather than selecting by color alone.

Reflective Fluorescent Yellow-Green Sheeting

Fluorescent yellow-green traffic signs combine the distinctive daytime background color with retroreflective sheeting for nighttime visibility. Products in this category with a fluorescent yellow-green option are available with DG3 Fluorescent Yellow-Green reflective sheeting.
