Red Road Signs Buying Guide

Red is used on traffic signs when the message involves stopping, prohibition, or a movement that is not permitted. Some signs, such as Stop and Do Not Enter, use red across most of the sign face. Others use red only for the legend, border, slash, or symbol.

What Do Red Road Signs Mean?

On roadway signs, red is most commonly associated with a required stop or a prohibited action. It helps drivers quickly recognize messages that require immediate attention.

For example, a Stop sign tells a driver where a complete stop is required. Do Not Enter and Wrong Way signs identify prohibited traffic movements. Red circles and diagonal slashes are also used on signs that prohibit specific turns or actions.

Common Red Road Signs

• Stop: Marks locations where vehicles are required to stop before proceeding.
• Do Not Enter: Prevents traffic from entering a roadway, ramp, driveway, or other restricted approach.
• Wrong Way: Warns drivers that they are traveling in the opposite direction of permitted traffic.
• All Way: Used with a Stop sign to indicate that traffic on every approach to the intersection is required to stop.
• No Parking: Identifies areas where parking is prohibited or subject to a specific restriction.
• Turn Prohibition Signs: Use red symbols or slashes to prohibit movements such as left turns, right turns, or U-turns.

Choose the Correct Sign First

Do not choose a traffic sign based on color alone. Start with the rule or message that needs to be communicated, then select the corresponding sign and MUTCD code when one applies.

Choose the Right Size

Many red regulatory signs are available in several sizes because visibility requirements vary by roadway and application. Smaller sizes may be suitable for certain low-speed or private-property applications, while larger signs are commonly used where greater viewing distance or roadway conditions require additional visibility.

For public-road installations, choose the size specified for the applicable MUTCD sign and roadway condition. If you are replacing an existing sign, matching its current size and code is a good starting point.

Choose Reflective Sheeting

Reflective sheeting returns light from vehicle headlights toward the driver, making the sign easier to see at night. Available options vary by product and may include High Intensity Prismatic and Diamond Grade DG3 reflective sheeting.

High Intensity Prismatic is a common choice for standard roadway signs. Diamond Grade DG3 provides higher retroreflective performance and may be selected when greater nighttime visibility or a project specification calls for it.
