Symbol at one end, message at the other

Put the symbol at one end and your message alongside it, like a do not enter symbol next to EXIT ONLY, or a bike symbol next to BIKE PATH, KEEP RIGHT. The side-by-side layout keeps the sign low enough for a fence, gate, or building wall. The symbol can be a crossing animal, an arrow, a parking P, or a no-entry sign.

Left or right?

People read left to right, so a symbol on the left is seen first and the words explain it. Move it to the right when something else, like a logo on the wall or a second sign, already sits on the left.
