Let a road symbol say it first

Put a familiar road symbol next to your own message: a parking P with VISITORS ONLY, a do not enter symbol with STAFF ONLY, a deer with SLOW. People take in the symbol first, so the sign makes sense before they reach the words.

  • Symbols for crossings, arrows, stop and yield, restrictions, and parking
  • Symbols in their real road-sign colors, or black ones printed in a color you pick

Picking a symbol

Choose the symbol that shows what you want people to do, not just the topic. A no left turn or no trucks symbol is clearer than the rule written out, and your words can add the who or when, like EXCEPT DELIVERIES.
