How can I tell if my old signs are extruded?
Look at the top and bottom edges. An extruded blade has a raised lip along its full length and feels thick and stiff. A flat blade is one thin, smooth sheet that flexes a little.
Which bracket does an extruded blade need?
One made for extruded blades, sized to the sign: 5.5 in for 6 in tall blades and the 12 in Jumbo bracket for 9 in tall blades. Choose your post type in the designer and it picks the matching bracket.

Extruded street name signs, the heavy blade cities use
An extruded blade is thicker and stiffer than a flat one. The aluminum is formed with a channel along the top and bottom edge, so a long sign stays straight in the wind and keeps its shape for years. We print your street name on both faces in 3M reflective sheeting, laid out to MUTCD sign D3-1, the national standard for street name signs.
- .090" extruded aluminum with formed top and bottom channels
- Square corners and no border, the classic city style
- Printed on both faces, no bolt holes through the sign
- White legend on green, blue, brown, or black, or black legend on white
- 3M High Intensity Prismatic or 3M Diamond Grade DG3
Extruded or flat?
Go with extruded when you are matching extruded signs already on your streets, when your posts have brackets made for extruded blades, or when you want the sturdiest sign we make. An extruded blade needs an extruded bracket, so take a look at the hardware on your posts before you order. For a lighter blade at a lower price, see our flat street name sign.
Letter height and blade length
A 6" tall blade gives you 4" capitals and a 9" tall blade gives you 6" capitals. Most public streets call for the 6" letters; the smaller size is meant for local roads with a speed limit of 25 mph or less. Length depends on how long the name is. The builder flags the shortest blade that fits while you type, and a name that needs more than 42" calls for a custom size.
Prefix, suffix, and letter style
Directions like E or NW go in front of the name and street types like Rd, Ln, or Pkwy go after it, each at half the height of the name. Set them high, centered, or low to copy your existing signs. Mixed case such as Oak Ridge Dr is what D3-1 calls for. The All capital letters box is there for private roads that must match an older set, because an all-capital blade is not MUTCD compliant.
Color choices
Green is the standard street sign color. Blue and brown blades, or a white blade with black letters, are the other schemes the MUTCD accepts. Our white on black blade is meant for private roads only, because black is not an MUTCD street sign color.
Choosing the sheeting
Most extruded signs go out with 3M High Intensity Prismatic. 3M Diamond Grade DG3 costs more and is our brightest option at night, with a 12-year warranty, which makes sense at busy intersections and on fast roads.
Included with your order
This is the extruded sign blade only, without posts or brackets. If your city or county has its own rules for street signs, check them before ordering. Replacing the signs at every intersection in a community? Request a quote for the whole order.
