The R3-9cP BEGIN plaque mounts with a regulatory sign to mark the start of a special zone such as a higher fines zone, school zone, work zone, or other regulated area. Black BEGIN legend on a white retroreflective background. Introduced in the 2023 MUTCD as part of the standardized series for marking the boundaries of regulatory zones.

Two sizes are available. The 24" x 12" is for conventional roads. The 36" x 18" is for multi-lane and higher-speed roads. Mounts on the same post as the associated regulatory sign. The matching END plaque (R3-9dP) is sold separately for marking the zone exit. Sign post, mounting hardware, and brackets are sold separately.
