The Chevron Alignment sign (W1-8) gives drivers continuous guidance through a sharp turn or curve. It is installed in a series along the outside of the curve, with each sign pointing in the direction the road bends, so the driver can track the path of the road through the entire change in alignment. Chevrons are used where a single Turn or Curve warning sign is not enough on its own: sharp horizontal curves, switchbacks, interchange ramps, and curves with a history of run-off-road crashes. They can be used on their own or alongside standard delineators.

This sign features a black chevron on a yellow retroreflective background. It is a vertical rectangle with no border, as specified in Section 2C.08 of the MUTCD. The face is .080" rustproof aluminum with 3M reflective sheeting options, including High Intensity Prismatic and Diamond Grade for the highest nighttime brightness on unlit curves. The chevron points in the direction of the curve, so choose the left-pointing sign for a curve that bends left and the right-pointing sign for a curve that bends right.

Choose the Right Size

18" x 24": The MUTCD standard size for conventional roads, both single-lane and multi-lane. This is the most common choice for county and municipal curves.

24" x 30": The MUTCD oversized size. Use it for added conspicuity on sharp curves, higher-speed conventional roads, or locations where the standard size needs to stand out more.

30" x 36": The MUTCD size for expressways and higher-speed divided highways.

36" x 48": The MUTCD size for freeways and the highest-speed applications.

How to Mount

Install each chevron on the outside of the turn or curve, facing approaching traffic at roughly a right angle to the oncoming lane. Mount the sign at a minimum height of 4 feet, measured from the bottom of the sign to the near edge of the road. Space the signs through the curve so a driver can see the next chevron before passing the one in front of it. The MUTCD bases this spacing on the curve radius, so tighter curves use more signs set closer together.

Each sign comes with pre-punched holes for standard post mounting. Sign posts, brackets, and mounting hardware are sold separately.

Note: The 36" x 48" size is oversized. Shipping is calculated at checkout, and larger signs may take longer to arrive.
