The R4-8 tells drivers to keep to the left of an island or obstruction, for example where traffic must pass on the left side of a median opening or a channelizing island. The symbol shows the obstruction with an arrow curving past on its left. Black symbol on a white retroreflective background, per MUTCD Chapter 2B.

Five sizes are currently available. The 24" x 30" is for single and multi-lane roads. The 36" x 48" is for expressways, or oversized for enhanced conspicuity. The 48" x 60" is for freeways. Two smaller sizes are also made: the 18" x 24" for low-volume roads and the 12" x 18" for parking lot islands and private drives, which is below the MUTCD minimum. Sign post, mounting hardware, and brackets are sold separately.
