Shoulder Drop-Off Left Warning Sign W8-17L

The W8-17L warns of a sharp edge where the pavement drops down to the shoulder, for a drop-off on the left. The MUTCD calls for it where an unprotected drop-off next to the travel lane is deeper than 3 inches for a long stretch of road (Section 2C.29). Black car-and-edge symbol on a yellow retroreflective background.

Five sizes are currently available. The 24" x 24" is the MUTCD minimum, for low-speed, low-volume roads. The 30" x 30" is for single-lane roads and the 36" x 36" for multi-lane roads and expressways. The 48" x 48" is for freeways, or oversized where the sign must stand out. An 18" x 18" is also made for private drives and parking areas, below the MUTCD road minimum. Sign post, mounting hardware, and brackets are sold separately.
