The W3-5a sign warns drivers of an upcoming speed zone with a reduced limit. Black "20 MPH SPEED ZONE AHEAD" legend on a yellow retroreflective background. Used in advance of a speed limit reduction where the new limit may not be visible in time, where the speed differential is significant, or where engineering judgment indicates the change should be flagged with a text legend rather than a speed limit symbol.

This listing is for the 20 MPH version. Other speed values are available as separate listings. The 36" x 36" is standard for conventional roads. The 48" x 48" is for expressways and freeways. Fluorescent Yellow sheeting is available for enhanced conspicuity in school zones and high-pedestrian areas. The W3-5 Speed Limit Ahead sign (with speed limit symbol) is also available as a separate listing for jurisdictions where the symbol legend is preferred.
