Construction Signs

Construction signs are the orange work zone signs defined in MUTCD Part 6 for temporary traffic control. This collection covers the full range: road condition and closure warnings like Road Work Ahead (W20-1), Road Closed Ahead (W20-3), One Lane Road Ahead (W20-4), Lane Closed (W20-5), and Detour Ahead (W20-2); work activity signs like Workers Symbol (W21-1), Men Working (W21-1B), Flagger Symbol (W20-7), Road Machinery Ahead (W21-3), Shoulder Work (W21-5), Survey Crew (W21-6), Utility Work Ahead (W21-7), and Mowers Ahead (W21-1C); traffic guidance signs like Be Prepared to Stop (CW3-4), Merge (W4-1), and Lane Reduction (W4-2); and supplemental plaques with distance options from 500 ft to 1 mile.

Choosing the right size

Match the size to the road type. The MUTCD specifies 36" x 36" for conventional roads and 48" x 48" for freeways and expressways, with a 30" x 30" minimum allowed only on low-speed, low-volume roads posted 25 mph or less. Oversized signs are allowed anywhere; undersized signs on higher-speed roads are not. Most contractors run 36" x 36" for standard road work and 48" x 48" for highway projects.

Reflective sheeting for work zones

All three sheeting options exceed the MUTCD minimum for ground-mounted construction signs. High Intensity Prismatic (HIP, ASTM Type IV) is the most common choice for standard work zones on conventional roads. Diamond Grade DG3 (Type XI) returns nearly twice the light of HIP for high-speed corridors and nighttime work. Diamond Grade Fluorescent Orange pairs the same full-cube reflectivity with a brighter daytime face, the best all-around option for crews that reuse signs across projects. If your project specs call out a sheeting grade, match the spec.

Keeping signs compliant

The MUTCD requires work zone signs to be in new or like-new condition every time they are deployed. Inspect signs before each project and replace any sign with fading, cracking, peeling, bending, or missing reflective material. A sign that reads fine in daylight can fail at night, so please check reflectivity after dark and keep replacements on hand.
