The W9-1L warns that the left lane ends ahead and traffic in it must merge right. It is placed in advance of the lane reduction, often together with the Lane Ends symbol sign (W4-2). Black LEFT LANE ENDS legend on a yellow retroreflective background, per MUTCD Chapter 2C.

Five sizes are currently available. The 30" x 30" is the minimum size, for single-lane roads. The 36" x 36" is the standard size for conventional roads and the minimum for multi-lane roads. The 48" x 48" is for expressways and freeways, or oversized for enhanced conspicuity. Smaller 24" x 24" and 18" x 18" sizes are also made for parking lots and private roads; they are below the MUTCD minimum, so they are not meant for public roads. Sign post, mounting hardware, and brackets are sold separately.
