The W8-4 warns that the road shoulder ahead is too soft to support a vehicle, for example fresh fill, sand or wet ground. Drivers should stay on the pavement. Black SOFT SHOULDER legend on a yellow retroreflective background, per MUTCD Chapter 2C.

Three sizes are currently available. The 24" x 24" is the minimum size, for low-volume roads posted at 30 MPH or less. The 36" x 36" is the standard size for conventional roads and the minimum for multi-lane roads. The 48" x 48" is for expressways and freeways, or oversized for enhanced conspicuity. Sign post, mounting hardware, and brackets are sold separately.
