The W4-3L warns drivers on the main road that another roadway joins from the left ahead and brings its own lane, so nobody has to merge. It suits left-side on-ramps and places where two highways come together side by side. Black added lane symbol on a yellow retroreflective background, per MUTCD Chapter 2C.

Five sizes are currently available. The 30" x 30" is the minimum size, for single-lane roads. The 36" x 36" is the standard size for conventional roads and the minimum for multi-lane roads. The 48" x 48" is for expressways and freeways. Two smaller sizes, 24" x 24" and 18" x 18", are also made for private roads and large parking lots; they fall below the MUTCD minimum. Sign post, mounting hardware, and brackets are sold separately.
