Rectangular signs are among the most widely used shapes in traffic signing, but the rectangle itself does not have one specific meaning. Depending on the color, orientation, legend, and MUTCD code, a rectangular sign can communicate a speed limit, parking rule, traffic restriction, directional message, street name, temporary detour, or supplemental information.

Vertical vs. Horizontal Rectangle Road Signs

Rectangle road signs can be installed with the longer dimension running vertically or horizontally. The orientation is determined by the design and amount of information the sign needs to display.

Vertical rectangle signs: Common in this collection for speed limits, parking regulations, lane instructions, pedestrian signs, road closures, and other regulatory messages. Their taller format provides room for symbols or multiple lines of information.

Horizontal rectangle signs: Common for street name signs, directional messages, detour arrows, and supplemental plaques. The wider format provides more room for street names, arrows, and longer legends.

Common Types of Rectangle Road Signs

• Speed limit signs: Vertical regulatory signs that display the applicable posted speed.
• Parking signs: Identify parking restrictions, reserved spaces, prohibited parking areas, and other parking regulations.
• Traffic regulatory signs: Communicate required movements, restrictions, lane use, passing rules, and other traffic regulations.
• Street name signs: Horizontal blades used to identify streets and intersections.
• Construction and detour signs: Include orange directional and temporary traffic-control signs used to guide road users through or around work zones.
• Supplemental plaques: Add information such as arrows, lane designations, distances, conditions, or other details to a primary traffic sign.

Choose the Correct Sign First

Because rectangular traffic signs serve many different purposes, shape alone should not be used to identify the correct sign. Start with the message or traffic-control function you need, then select the corresponding MUTCD code when one applies.

If you are replacing an existing roadway sign, matching the MUTCD code, legend, dimensions, color, and orientation is a good starting point.

What Size Rectangle Road Sign Do I Need?

There is no single standard size for rectangular road signs. Dimensions vary considerably depending on the sign type, amount of information, roadway conditions, and required viewing distance.

Vertical regulatory signs may be relatively narrow and tall, while horizontal street name signs and directional signs can be much wider than they are high. Supplemental plaques are often sized to coordinate with the primary sign they accompany.

For public-road installations, use the size specified for the individual MUTCD sign and roadway application. Do not select a size based only on the overall rectangular shape.

Reflective Sheeting

Available reflective sheeting varies by product. Many signs in this collection are offered with High Intensity Prismatic or Diamond Grade DG3 sheeting, while certain warning and work-zone signs may have fluorescent reflective options.

High Intensity Prismatic (HIP): A common standard option for many roadway applications.

Diamond Grade DG3: A higher-performing reflective option for projects requiring greater nighttime visibility.

Material and Mounting

Most standard signs in this collection are made from .080" aluminum for long-term outdoor use. Some specialty products, including certain extruded street name blades, use a different aluminum profile or thickness.

Mounting requirements depend on the sign. Vertical panels can be installed on compatible U-channel, square, or round posts, while street name blades use dedicated street name brackets and caps. Posts, brackets, and mounting hardware are generally sold separately.
